Costumes and coolness at ConCarolinas 2012

This weekend, I attended my first ConCarolinas, an annual sci-fi convention in Charlotte, NC. I met actor Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun/Brunt in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Kevin in The 4400, and many more), who autographed a picture for me with “Long live the Dominion.” I rode an elevator with Monster Man Cleve Hall. I saw many Klingons, stormtroopers, ghostbusters, elves, vampires and a wookie.

The best part of the weekend, for me, was listening to Jeffrey Combs tell stories — especially the ones about punking Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) on the set of DS9, and how Casey Biggs’ mad gulping skills inspired the writers to turn Damar into a drunk. The Cardassians are my favorite Star Trek characters. Those neck ridges and black uniforms are wicked sexy.

I also loved the costumes all over ConCarolinas. I have a very bad case of costume fetish, and I’ve always enjoyed Halloween, Ren Faires, cosplay, and historic re-enactments, for that reason. I don’t know how I lived four decades on this planet without attending conventions — I’ve been to three this year. The attendees of ConCarolinas really put a lot of love and detail into their costumes, and I enjoyed every bit of it. My favorites are below.

A few of the uber awesome people I met (or reacquainted myself with):

Venusian Airship Pirate Trading Company – Steampunk weaponry
Nala Serenity – Browncoat goods
Sleeping Dragon – Handmade dragons
Charlotte Geeks – Geek Gala on Oct. 27
Ribbons and Rivets – Handmade armor and leather goodies
Chainmail Chick – model
Sarah L. Covert – Writer, editor, publisher
R2-KT – Pink Star Wars droid
Blibbering Humdingers – Wizard Wrockers

– J.L. Hilton
